I am sorry for the boring title on this entry, but I have this life goal to write publicly about what engineers DO, so that kids and people outside of STEM won't find it as intimidating and they can see themselves solving problems with us. And realize that it's not all differential equations and bring a brilliant instant inventor.

We do similar stuff. And sometimes you get a pair of shoes with one white lace, one green lace, and a sole they found in the back of a closet somewhere.

Weird, this is like 90% of my work, too--but with people. Like, start with a message to make people do X and then lining up a system Y that is triggered by action X, and then on down the path from there, with everything they need along the way. Building and maintaining systems that direct people to behave in certain ways en masse, and then changing those as needs change and as people's expectations and behaviors change. My job is to the know the full system and do the constant monitoring to make sure all the parts line up--from the marketing to the tech to the onsite operations, every little part along the way.

And sometime you have eight different laces and twelve different soles - but sole #9 and lace #3 will constructively interfere to cause users to trip and fall, so you have to somehow permit all possible combinations except those two.
