Fic fail

Aug 03, 2010 09:00

I just got a review of TPP, wherein someone has told me that I have now turned them AWAY from their original idea of Sheldon/Penny, because I'm so cruel to poor little Leonard. I've done him an 'awful disservice', because 'he's not like that'. Apparently, my fic seems 'desperate', and I made Penny and Sheldon into nasty people to deliberately ( Read more... )

where did i go wrong?, writing, life

No, they were serious. And they do claim to have read the whole thing.

I really do feel like I've failed, somehow, which is ridiculous. But... I don't see where I made the characters nasty, and I drew all the behaviour from canon.

I'm just in a bad place at the moment - the comedown after finishing TPP, health issues and the rather arid prospects for future fandom happy. I want to be excited by something again. :(

Well, I'm trying to work on my original stuff, so I daren't get too sucked into anything. (And yes, this includes the siren call of the Tardis, dammit.) But I would dearly love a new book, or a show to get really geeked over, without the dreadful fear that it is going to disappoint me. (Castle/Mentalist/BBT , I'm looking at you.)

Maybe this is just that odd disconnected phase before all the elements in my head come together and produce something. Bleh.

Makes chamomile tea, strokes sweaty brow, *there there*

You know we love you spaceanjl, you can't please everybody. Besides I actually think you painted Leonard better than the show's writers have.

You're not doing one of those creepy serial killer smiles, are you?

Meh, as I say, bad headspace at the mo. Creative comedown is always a swine.

Not really sure how to do a creepy serial killer smile. Although I have been told I have the handwriting of a serial killer.

Actually I'm just chilling, sitting sipping a very nice Cab Sav and watching a new game show we have here called, 'Minute to Win it'

I think this may be a troll who's playing it very well. I don't think for a second that someone ACTUALLY felt that way. Because no one would actually LEAVE that kind of fanfic unless they were deliberately trying to upset you.

What is about the human condition that makes us focus on the one person who says negative things about us or our work while we ignore the dozens (in your case - hundreds) of people who love you and praise your work?

Your story was great. Penny and Sheldon were not nasty in TPP.

The person who complained obviously doesn't pay attention to the show either - Leonard is a whiny and jealous individual on it too.

I recently re-watched S1 after the disappointing morass that S3 became with its attendant awful!Leonard baggage and was surprised by how much I almost wanted to like him three years ago. It's terrible what the writers have done with his character.

He actually made me smile and laugh a number of times in S1; by S3, I was bitching at nearly everything he did on screen.

My husband has said exactly the same thing. We almost liked him back then, but S3 has seen everyone go down a bad, bad path. One channel over here has been showing S1 re-runs just before S3 ep's, and it is painful. There was a REASON the show didn't get nominated for any awards this year. Learn, people!

Sadly, it looks like S4 is going back to the L/P agenda, bashing Sheldon as a freak and generally pitching itself at the fart-gag mediocracy again.

Funny, I posted the same comment that they really shouldn't be all that surprised for not being nominated and it got deleted real quick. Blind love.

I'm not sure that that person and I read the same fic....

If anything, Leonard did some growing!

Oy.

I suppose everyone's a critic. They'll just have to get over it. ;)

It's very weird, certainly. I think the line ' I'm not sure I can like Penny with Sheldon if fans of them have to think of Leonard this way.' confused me the most - it isn't like I speak for some heretical sect here. I happen to think of Leonard that way, so I wrote him that way.

I know, it's not like anyone is forcing their views on anyone else! If that's how you see Leonard--and as of this season, yeah, I can see him that way too, certainly!--then it's well within your rights to write him that way.

This person isn't being forced to read it. If they don't like it, they can read something else!

(Do you happen to know this person's name? Just curious if we're getting the same whiners or if more are popping out of the wood work. They seem to be. -_-;)

It's on my ffnet reviews. I think it might be a different one to yours, though.

The idea that someone might have bothered to read the whole thing, just to be persuaded to the other point of view does rather beggar belief, though. I shall choose to think it is just pointless and puzzling.
