Yep, went to go see it today, and I have to say, that the time I spent watching the movie flew by. It kept me engrossed the whole way through. And that's saying something. :-)
One funny thing before I lj-cut for spoilers, since today is mother's day and I went to the first showing, there weren't all that many people in the theater, however, almost everyone that was? Was middle-aged. Hee! Those of us who watched ST:TOS as kids coming to see what J.J. was doing to our show.
And one other thing that I don't think is spoilery. DeForrest Kelly stretched down his arm from heaven and put his hand on Karl Urban's shoulder. Karl was McCoy.
And now
... I really liked the plot of this movie, and I liked the bad guys, because they weren't "M'wah ha ha" bad guys, they were rather ordinary people who had suffered an unthinkable tragedy, and went mad from it. To be honest, I always preferred the Romulans over the Klingons as the conflict in TOS. The Klingons always did seem the m'wah ha ha type of bad guys, while the Romulans were more cerebral and, therefore, interesting.
J. J. taking the show and deliberately going AU with it was really pretty genius. It does explain why the new guys are so different from the original guys. And it will take me a while to wrap my brain around the fact that they are so different. I do have to say though that while I thought Chris Pine was brilliant in the role of Kirk, he kept reminding me more of Tony DiNozzo's kid brother than he did Jim Kirk. ;-)
Zackery Qunito did a very good job as Spock, but I'm not sure how I feel about the Uhura/Spock romance. J. J. took the only female in the lead cast and turned her into Spock's girlfriend. Because she couldn't be just awesome on her own, I guess.
Scotty was hyperactive, but he was AWESOME! I loved Simon Pegg in the role, even though his Scotty wasn't really even recognizable as Montgomery Scott.
The Russian kid was cute as Chekov, and John Cho was okay as Sulu, but neither was particularly awesome. The same with the girl that played Uhura. As I said, J.J. just took Uhura from saying, "Hailing frequencies open, Captain," to abandoning her duty station to run after Spock and swap spit. Not a huge improvement.
But, as I said, for itself, the movie was great, and I don't feel cheated out of my money. :-)
Now, let's talk about the previews they showed before the show. First up was the new Night at the Museum, and even the previews made me lol.
Next up was Land of the Lost starring Will Ferrell, and like almost everything I've seen with Will Ferrell, it looked like it had been written by a retarded monkey.
After that, Jack Black in Year One. See my comment about Land of the Lost.
Then the new Terminator movie. Oh, baby, baby. Yeah, that one looked good, and I may have to go see that one. :-d
The next two movies, G. I. Joe and the new Transformer movies are ones I'll see on DVD if I'm just totally in the mood to watch a mindless CGI movie. Neither interested me in the least.
