Для прояснения вопроса со щитами-aspar у русов попробовал поискать у Асохика еще их упоминания. Оказалось, что это единственный случай, когда щиты упоминаются в тексте прямо.
Зато нашлось еще занятное - "стена щитов" в III.8 и III.41. Русский перевод тут и тут. Он аховый.

III.8. Война Цимисхия со Святославом. Стену щитов выставляют русы или болгары.
He himself went to the country of the Bulgars to campaign against them. They allied themselves to the Rus and advanced in battle against him. When they engaged one another, the Rus drove back the two wings of the battle-line of the Greeks. The king held firm with the Armenians of the whole infantry force in the centre of the battle-line; the contingent of infantry soldiers fought valiantly, who are called Sałark‘. In front of the king, they breached the shield-wall which was [raised] against them. The king together with all the cavalry forces penetrated [at that point], and putting the sword to work, cut them to pieces, bodies scattered about on all sides. He reduced the Bulgars to obedience.

հետեւակայիններ - пехотинцы, то же обозначение, что и у русов в III.43, насколько понимаю.
պատառեալ - рвать
վահանափակ - стена/баррикада/ограда/препятствие из щитов, как-то так. Щиты тут - վահան, "vahan". Это "щит" в самом общем смысле, насколько понимаю, "нечто укрывающее и защищающее". Для сравнения - мелькающее у Прокопия φραξάμενοι ταῖς ἀσπίσιν и его производные. III.23 и VIII.5

III.41. Пехотинцы-дайлемиты.
When the forces of the Persians realized that they did not want voluntarily to come down to them battle, and especially when they realized their lack of numbers in comparison to their own multitude, on the first day of the month of areg, a Monday, towards dawn, they rose and set out a formation in a complicated disposition; they fashioned a battle-line across the face of the broad plain employing a Delmastanean shield-wall. They went and drew near to the hill of the camp of the Armenians and Iberians.
