Adventures in Dampland

That's what I've decided to call my column in the paper. Here are the first two, for posterity or something. I realized after turning it in that I'd like to have added some stuff to the first one, and will undoubtedly think the same about every single one, but I'm resisting the urge to change it. Anyways, so here you go.

Thank you.

Well, wake is definitely used in the South as a pre-funeral thing. It was also definitely used today here as a post-funeral thing. So there, you get to broaden your vocabulary a bit - welcome to my life ;-)

Aye, some people call it viewing. The two are interchangeable in the south, I think.

Mmm, yes, slideshows, hadn't thought of that. Perhaps Bobby & Bryan's boards were 16x20, I really can't remember. Their boards were halfway down the (large) room, which I liked - if anyone didn't want to go near the caskets, they didn't have to.

Aye, my experience generally agrees with yours for order of service, even if the terms differ (viewing, funeral, burial, after party, possibly memorial service). I'm really unclear (for both places) on the burial bit, whether that's an everyone thing or a close friends and family thing - and it seems they're all really confused about it here, too, because I've gotten a variety of answers when I've asked.

What would we do without church basements?! ;-)
