It's always hard when I sense that a friendship is coming to an end but it's especially hard when it's one that has some heavy emotional mileage on it. What's that poem.... people come into your life for a reason or something like that.
Bottom line, as long as you've done everything you can to still be good friend without compromising yourself, then that's really all you can do. Mentally wish Ray luck in his future endeavors, embrace the relationship you once had with him and take what you've learned from it to make yourself a better person. Not that you're not already awesome cause you are, but now you can be SUPER awesome. :)
I believe that often, people are placed in our lives to serve a purpose. Maybe the purpose is coming to a close and you are both ready to move forward in your lives. Friendship break-ups are hard, but from what you posted, you have a lot to look forward to, and that's so wonderful.
Of course he allowed you to continue doing all of those things for him - he didn't have to worry about them himself! But now that you know the situation, it's your responsibility to hand it back over to him, b/c it really has nothing to do with you.
Congrats on the new apartment, the dating, and loving your job! I can't wait to read and find out what happens in the upcoming days/months with this Ian guy!
I think giving yourself some distance is a good idea. I don't think you have to make a firm decision about Ray until you've had time to sit with it in the new place, and it may also resolve itself one way or another. but yeah, 2 months is taking it slow? - only if you're 15. :o
