Various web comic thoughts
Blitzed through another few comics over the last couple of weeks but only really have anything useful to say about one of them (the others are all just RAEBNC; sorry about that, but the last time I tried dredging up thoughts on comics that I had just enjoyed to some degree without really having strong feelings about, my rather lukewarm reactions ended up offending people. That is not what I am aiming for with these commentaries).
Anyway the one that's got something worth saying about it is Exterminatus Now. Which is rather funny. And also rather British. Although, despite the title, there haven't been any Dalek sightings yet.
It's basically another monster-hunter comic, with a quasi-religious setting reminiscent of Van Helsing, but in this case, instead of a cast of heroes (square-jawed or otherwise), this comic's cast are more like The Young Ones-style idiots, drawn in the style of computer game characters.
For all that, it's still very funny, as well as having a decent plot behind the humour. But as it's a certain type of British humour, readers should be warned that about a third of the jokes (and about half the ones that are actually funny) are about bodily functions.
As for the RAEBNC batch: they're Night Shift, Starfire Agency, Beast of Eden and Roza and the Horse Prince. Currently I'm working my way through Freefall which, at about half way through, is looking surprisingly good and thoughtful. More in a couple of weeks' time, hopefully.
Also finally found a blog about web comics that's decent reading. Web Snark. At any rate it's a hell of a lot more interesting than the last web comics blog I was pointed to - one which seemed to be someone expressing his heartfelt loathing for all "popular" web comics (Sluggy Freelance and User Friendly both got severely flamed) in such a style that he didn't come across as serious at all.
