This morning I went to the barn to ride Red, as usual. After warming up, I started practicing circle and spirals in the outside ring when suddenly I hear a cry and see something move in the grass (there's a patch of taller grass in the ring). I see two little things that look like very large mice. Except they're not mice, they're baby cottontail ( Read more... )

Awwwww ... but you probably did the right thing. I am sure its family would have been very worried whereever the poor thing had gone :)

I've had a few experiences with baby birds that fell out of their nests, and they have always died. It sounds like your little rabbit is going to be all right. Keep us updated.

Yes the rabbit I rescued from my pool was a baby, and he was terrified when I rescued him from drowning because he went from not being able to breathe to not being able to escape the scary human. I kept him inside for a while until he was a little drier and lively, and then I took his scared little self back to the woods near the pool.

Days later I saw my neighbor's cat capture (and presumably kill) a baby rabbit. I tried to chase him, but slipped in the grass, and he got away. I hoped it wasn't the same rabbit I had just rescued, because if it was, then I should've just let him drown. I bet death by cat was much worse.

We've found a few dead animals in our pool from time to time. A squirrel, some mice, perhaps some frogs. But we have a fence, so we haven't found any deer or dogs. My mom was telling me recently, though, that when the pool was under construction, and the fence wasn't up yet, some deer almost ran into the pool when it had no water. Man, that would've been a nasty mess.

Josh and I took care of a pool last year while its owners were gone on vacation. It was sweet and I said that when we have a house, I wanted a pool. Then we started finding dead mice and frogs, and I changed my mind. Poor little things! There was one big frog/toad we found regularly in the skimmer baskets. He was tough and never died, but when we took him out, he would just sit there for an hour, because he was so exhausted!
