So. I actually wrote this several weeks ago and didn't post it at the time; today I mentioned it to
1st_eggokage on Tumblr, and she urged me to post it (and then was extraordinarily nice about it.) I swore I wouldn't start moving any significant writing to Tumblr, so I am crossposting it promptly here.

(Double thanks, since I'm now embroiled in defending this at fandomsecrets. WHY DON'T I LEARN.)

As I said on my own journal, it could have done with cutting out the pantyshots, but then again I'm pretty sure that if the first level of fantasy had taken place in a convent and the girls had spent the entire movie dressed from neck to ankle, people would have complained about it repressing female sexuality.

I think the pantyshots were a case of a good idea that was poorly executed; I think Snyder was trying to make the audience members objectifying the girls realize that and leave feeling guilty about it. Which could have actually done a lot to make people less likely to be creeps, but it's really hard to pull off and I don't think he quite did. I'm hoping he does another girl-centered action movie and tries something else instead.

The part of my life where I actually think I need to feel empowered is my mental health, and I have to say Sucker Punch really did help there.

I didn't actually think of it from that angle. Are you okay explaining? (Totally fine if you don't wanna; I don't mean to pry.)
