Oh, hey, you read Bhagat! Hurrah! And, yes - it is TOTAL fluff. But it is proper modern India fluff - not literature, not white-people-discovering-themselves, just Indian twenty-somethings being Indian twenty-somethings! I'm really glad you liked it. His later books - 2 States and The Three Mistakes of My Life - are just as charming but technically better, which is nice.

Yeah, I really liked that it was completely unapologetic about its perspective: as someone who is obviously not Indian, even a lot of the Indian lit I've read has been kind of... explanatory, very conscious of a white audience, and while that's certainly understandable and arguably important and necessary in a bunch of ways, I can completely see the appeal of not having that line there. The ability to be sillier and to jump over the explanations I kept half-expecting was FUN, if nothing else! I will totally keep an eye out for the other two. :)

Oh, also! Bhagat's first book was adapted as 3 Idiots. I finally saw it the other day, and, omg omg! If you get the chance, do see it.

Ooh, I am glad you enjoyed Rebecca. I have always found it fascinating. And no, not romantic at all, which is something that annoyed me about the adaptation that starred (I think I remember rightly?) Emilia Fox as the 2nd Mrs, cos it ramped up the romance/sexiness between her and Max and it just... didn't work for me in terms of what I thought the novel was trying to do...

I totally found it fascinating and yeah, almost all my exposure to it was either through the adaptation adverts or people talking about it as a romance, and I didn't find it that way at all. I mean, whatever your opinion of their romantic attraction or the rest of the story, "these are happy people in love who end up having a happy and fulfilled life through their love together" is clearly not the point of the book!

Yeah, the Newsflesh trilogy really needs to be taken as as a trilogy in story terms. Her other current series has a female POV character, and if you balance out the two together, it's a lot less gender-fail :)

I definitely do need to find the third one. :) And I am also definitely impressed enough to read other series by her. Thankyou for the introduction!

You've kind of intrigued me with Rebecca. I didn't care much for the Hitchcock movie, so I've been skeptical of the book since then... but maybe I should give it a shot. Hmm. *gazes thoughtfully off into the distance*

If creepy psychological weirdness/mystery-ness sounds good, I recommend it! And I am happy to go into more detail if you'd like. :)
