It says a lot about TV that the casting of Huge is so remarkable-just seeing bigger bodies as the norm in a teen drama felt subversive. And it was both comforting and sad, because it shouldn't be that way. I hadn't seen much of Gina Torres before, but she was a great choice for Dr. Rand. She's so quietly nuanced, far from the flat antagonist she could have been.
Yeah, seriously! It was so refreshing, and sad, and weirdly comforting that someone else sees this stuff as messed up and will say so. Gina Torres - and do forgive me if you already know this! - is best known for being in Firefly, where she is a taciturn, asskicking soldier type with a flair for the deadpan. Further from Dr Rand you couldn't really get, but she's wonderful. Like you said, she could easily have been Eeeeevil Camp Director but no, she really does think she's doing something actively good and she really wants to help the kids. She's got such heart, while also being so vulnerable and flawed herself, and just aw. I want to hug her.
The thing about George's dad is at no point did the word 'werewolf' come up. They kept referring to it a a 'disease' and 'my... thing'. I was waiting for a 'oops he thinks George is gay' kind of reveal, since it was actually getting kinda laboured, but the whole 'he's not actually a ghost' rather beat me to it :) I was surprised how readily he accepted the fact that George thought he was a ghost, but I guess it tied in with the assumption he seemed to have going that George was schizophrenic. I did like that George seemed to catch on to this, rather than continuing to assume that his dad understood he was a werewolf.
I just realised I forgot to reply to this! Sorry about that, and thankyou for the explanation, that does make more sense. I'll probably rewatch and not get distracted by knitting this time. *g*
