Have you seen Tom and Lorenzo yet? They've done awesomely insightful recaps of all of Season 4 and even better style recaps for Season 4 and the major characters in Seasons 1-3. Eye candy galore! Go down to the bottom of the homepage and search for "Mad Men" or "Mad Style". I've, er, wasted a lot of time on those. ;)

I love your analysis of MadMen - lots of stuff I think but don't have the time to write, and stuff I also didn't think about, too. I LOVE the privilege dialogue between Peggy and new bf - it's beautifully tying the modern discussion about privilege to a discussion that they're NOT quite having, but it so totally about what was goign on in that time, and in their relationship. This show is SO GOOD at reflecting back to us the difficulties we're having RIGHT NOW, in what in many ways seems like an utterly alien time ( ... )

Tooootally - I really love that one of the things they do really well is point out how the frames of reference, the way we think about things, has changed so drastically, in many respects much more drastically than the change in the way we do things. We can see in that conversation the beginnings of discussion of privilege, but that isn’t how they’re thinking about it.

Re: the surprise!DonEngagement. I intially had your reaction, but now I think it makes perfect sense, and though it seemed weird to a modern audience, was actually built up to quite skillfully. Don falls in marriange!love with the secretary becuase she's good with kids. It sounds silly ( ... )

I think the relationship with Don and Peggy is really interesting. There's a really interesting... I want to say 'blind line' for Don with Peggy? He made an automatic association with her when she turned out to have secretly done something potentially life destroying that, if she could manage to set behind her and cover up as he had covered things up, she could get up and prove herself to be a really strong person and personality to be reckoned with. And she did. Which is to say, she covered it up and set it behind her and went on presenting an even stronger, more self-assured face. (They have both done something that is storing up MAJOR consequences further down the line, and which causes MAJOR consequences for people who should have also been important in their lives at the time - for Don, his brother and the 'real' Don's wife; for Peggy, her family and baby ( ... )

I am glad, though, that Sally is moving away from creepy!boy. I mean, I know Betty's being unfair, and Sally's losing her close friend... but Betty has a right to be creeped out by that boy and I totally understand why she wants to keep Sally away from him. Which is not to say that Betty is right to blame the boy for being curious, or for abusing a power she allowed him to take from her - he's a boy, and he was a very young, lonely boy at the time - but I do find him creepy, and, as a viewer, I didn't want Sally to be friends with him. Of course, there's no one for Betty to be honest about why she reacted so badly to knowing he'd been round about. No one to talk through it with. Betty is isolated the intersubjectivity of real relationships.

Oh! These characters are so complex and awesome. I wish there were more NOW. I hadn't realised it was over until today :(
