AAH I AM SO HAPPY YOU ARE LOVING MAD MEN. I have watched the first 2 seasons and it's so amazing! And sometimes so depressing, but you're right that it's refreshing to watch a show that IS AWARE of crazy racism/sexism and so on. And yes, you're right, the appreciation of the complexities of patriarchy is one of the things that makes it most rewarding. And I have such a girl crush on Joan. Also, when Chloe and I had our Mad Men Mondays, part of each episode was always devoted to BOOING at Pete. Like, pantomime style. He's just such an ASS.
OK, OK. OK. I know you're still on series 1 and therefore Pete is a gigantic gaping arsehole. But I've seen the future (most of series 3) and actually, I have to say Pete is not so bad. Yes, he's a fake, inconsiderate wanker who'll fuck anyone if he thinks it'll advance him. But he's very smart, he sees how things work and he's trapped to an extent by the mores of his time. I did spend most of series 1 booing and cringing at his every line but now I'm something of a (whisper it) Pete lover.
I am sooort of with this - not a Pete lover, but while I find certain of his actions unforgivable (and he is also, obviously, a smarmy overprivileged little prick), I do find him fascinating and there are flashes of sympathy for how small and insecure he looks next to Sterling and how trapped he is.
How far exactly have you watched s3? Because Pete does have his contingent of squeeing fans, and not just white dudes, which post-3x08 particularly icks me. Buuut his relationship with Trudy has its moments, and yeah, for someone so talented at saying exactly the wrong thing (or even a fairly appropriate thing that SOUNDS WRONG because it's PETE saying it) he's better prepared than much of the company to deal with the changes of the 60s.
Yeah, that's Mad Men, eh. EVERYONE IS A HORRIBLE PERSON. Even Peggy, sometimes.
