Hey, Rachel Maddow: I agree with you that those things should never have been on your show in the first place, but goddamn do I love your smack-down afterwards.I wanted to write about my love of space and science and sci-fi and why they are completely and forever linked for me on the anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, but, um, I didn't. It DOES. *hugs back a lot* I am relatively lucky with it (it's mostly just my right wrist/fingers at the moment) and it is just IRRIATING and way more painful than I guessed. (That is a failure of imagination on my part, but seriously, who invents this shit? It is not on.)

I feel your pain (quite literally, and recently up to the elbow in my right arm, thankfully far less in my left). Gods, wtf is it with bodies? They're always breaking or finding a way to make using a mouse really difficult.

[What I really don't understand is the itching, which always happens a few hours before I need to stop using my hands or crack open the Ibuprofen. Thank the gods for Ibuprofen!]

OK, I'm going to stop whinging now and get back to the smut writing :P

Why is my entire friendslist reading "The Sparrow" all of a sudden?

I'm beginning to think I'm the only person on this planet that didn't love it...no, I am mistaken: China Miéville criticized it for inciting ANAL PENETRATION PANIC! (I have really got to read some China Miéville someday.)

Mary Doria Russel writes beautifully but sometimes she really makes me go WTF? I just finised "Dreamers of the Day" which is FABULOUS until the last chapter when it turned into "oh, by the way, I am speaking to you from beyond the grave. Napoleon Bonaparte is here too."

WHY, MARY DORIA RUSSELL, WHY?

Liz. It's all Liz.

Did The Sparrow have that effect? Or, rather-- I'm curious, what didn't you like about it?

I had some similar problems myself - the reveal I found lacking, as well as the jumping to conclusions part. (My problem with Sofia thinking that Sandoz looked like a conquistador was a problem that actually extended beyond that - it was like the world was made up of DIFFERENT RACES and everybody knows EVERYBODY ELSE'S family/racial history, and that what happened to your people 200 years ago is still just as relevant as it was then. THAT I found to be - a stretch? If that makes sense? (Also, the missionary aspect of the book bothered me a wee bit, I won't lie. I GET why it was the way it was, but still.)

But I still find so much of her writing SO AMAZING and so interesting and thoughtful and beautiful that I can kind of get past the iffy bits, if that makes sense. (Although I'm still slightly bitter about the Sofia/Jimmy romance, which DID seem a bit "last man on earth" to me.)
