... in which there's somewhere left in England that is not for sale

Ok, so, this morning I was reading the Torygraph (it's like the Daily Mail for posh people!) and I came across this.

Just... ew. I can't even describe the levels on which I disgaree with this fucknut. I disagree that there is a "correct" way of speaking, I disagree that the "English have lost their voice" (um, all those people you mention are also ( Read more... )

knitty and witty and gay, blighty, inconvenient truth, politics, the subject of laaaanguage, docteur qui, feminist rage

my dad reads the Telegraph - or at least he buys it for the crossword... i like the cartoon on the front page personally! i read it sometimes but it usually makes me angry, i much prefer the Guardian. i read that because it's funny and smart and it has a giant media section every monday with media jobs ^_^

that article you posted was written by a knob. stupid man can't tell the difference between accents and acting. it's not compulsary for 'personalities' to speak the queens english any more, and it's a good thing. it's less alienating. though i can't tell you how much i hate the voice of the bloke who narrates big brother! lol

My gran reads it, hence why it's ahnging around my house for me to read. :) I find it interesting, in that it's a different perspective that makes me want to kill people at least a little less than the Daily Mail does, but my newspaper love is definitely given to the Grauniad, god bless it. :)

And heh, the Big Brother dude amuses me ("deeeiy eeeeit" heh) but I agree the greater variation is a very good thing. Why shouldn't random people from Stoke or whatever get to hear themselves on TV too? Dude just makes no sense.

This is what won me over to the guardian.
i was writing an essay/project (cant remember) about the representation of dubya in the press and i found that article. what's weird though is that my essay came out sympathetic to bush when i hate the man! lol!

i think maybe i don't like the big brother voiceover guy because he's the big brother voiceover guy. it's like i find davina maccall really irritating too, i know get that she's really snarky about the show when presenting it but god she's annoying!

I just want to say I admire the hell out of both your brain and you in GENERAL, Katie. Just. Yes. Especially that last paragraph there above the parenthesis and ETA. *LOVES*

And, yeah, I read about the Northwest Passage in the paper this morning and had the same reaction. :\

Absolute WORD. Accents are brilliant things, even if I can't understand most of them. I's just a shame that the same thing he's grumbling about is the cause of weaker accents, as people get exposed to so many that aren't their own. One day, we may have one strange homogenous accent, which will be sad.

Ah. A knob. We were a distressingly long way through school before it was suggested to a class of thirty-something kids, maybe four of whom spoke RP, that RP wasn't a default and it certainly wasn't 'no accent'... as so many people called it.

I've got longer and more developed thoughts on the article that I will expound upon later because I have to leave now so I can go watch the Saints game at my friend's house. (P.S., That is usually a pizza and beer thing, but you had to go and say "Punjabi," and now I want curry.)

Also, if you don't make one of those knit Daleks, I might have to come over there and punch you in the face. And I wouldn't even stay to hang out.

I would LOVE your more developed thoughts, yay. And I feel no compunction about making you want curry at all, NONE AT ALL I TELL YOU MWAHAHAH.

Ahem. Heh.

(And it's a good thing my making a knitty Dalek is pretty much inevitable, then, eh? :) )
