I have made a very exciting discovery! Check it out, people, recaps of all the Patrick O'Brian Aubrey/Maturin books! Good ones, too; you can tell by the way they're titled things like "Revenge of the Nudists", heh. But with the Patrick O'Brian books, or Horatio Hornblower, basically everybody in the fandom ends up doing tonnes of research. So not only do you get fic of yayness, you also get to feel more knowledgable.

Don't you have to do research for a lot of fandoms, though, not just the historical ones? I mean, we over here in West-Wing-land have certainly done CRAZY amounts of research for the political stories we write. And I certainly feel like I know tons more about politics than I did when I first started.

Oh, you certainly can do lots of research for non-historical fics, and the best ones (point in question: present company :)) tend to. It's just that so many people don't, if it's modern day and they're focussing on the characters and such anyway. But for historical fic, you have to research absolutely everything, right down to what underwear was worn when and by whom and stuff, for even the tiniest fic.
