Landscape prints

Oct 24, 2017 17:25

I've been taking an evening printmaking class for the last year or so, and I recently found myself with four extra pieces of linoleum, a habit of defaulting to landscapes, and lots of thoughts and feelings about qt ... so I made some sprints depicting specific settings in the books, one each for Eddis, Attolia, Sounis, and the Mede Empire. I stuck ( Read more... )

I love these! They remind me of the linocut illustrations in the copy of Ursula LeGuin's The Tombs of Atuan that I had as a kid. Like this one.

Thank you! I'm a big fan of chapter illustrations, and that one is beautiful!

These are wonderful! They remind me of woodblock carvings and suit the feel of the series perfectly.

Thank you! I'm glad that my fairly undercover/innocuous fanart still suits the feel. :)

Wood actually is my material of choice for relief prints -- it's so fun and quick -- but the tools I have now aren't sharp enough for that, so I've been using linoleum instead.

Ah! I remember trying my hand at printmaking in a long ago art lesson. These are lovely! The first one, of Eddis, is my favorite. It captures the atmosphere of the quote and description you use really well!

I like the black and white, but since you asked, I tend to associate Sounis with sandy tones... golds and yellows and pale greens. I'm not sure why.

I'm glad you like them! I also associate Sounis with those colors -- maybe because of lions or the fact that TT starts in the late summer? I don't generally experience synesthesia, so for me there are probably textual reasons buried somewhere. Eddis is reddish brown (a more natural tone of the red in the throne room?) and Attolia is green (because of the Vince Natale cover and its higher rainfall?), but the Mede Empire is too darn big to be any color in particular at the moment. :)

These are gorgeous and I'd love to have a set of them. I'm messaging you my info now. Thank you!

I remember one happy semester in art class where we worked with linoleum blocks. I can't remember what I made, but I so enjoyed working in that medium.

Yes! It's so fun. You should try it again if you have any interest; it's definitely the type of printmaking that can most easily be done at home, if you use a wooden spoon or a barren instead of a giant press!

(also woohoo thanks for giving some of my prints a home!)

These are beautiful. I quite like the one of the amphitheater. It reminds me of the time I sat on the marble seats of the one at Epidauros and watched the play Alcestis.

I'm so glad that you like them! As I've yet to go to Greece, I referenced my memories of the smaller and much less ancient amphitheater on Mt. Tamalpais, in California. Your experience sounds lovely.

Speaking of Mount Tam, here you go:

See track 15, with lyrics.

Several gorgeous arts deserve several more.
