Great summary, live_momma! I snickered at the heading, Wait until your father gets home! The motivations behind Gen's decision to sit with Costis until the queen arrives are certainly varied, but on a surface level one does get a mental picture of two uneasy children waiting it out together, awaiting their doom for being naughty ( ... )

Yes, Costis is absolutely determined to dislike the king, no matter what.

The underestimating reminded me, too, of Gen's comment about hearts and Sophos thinking that he'd hand his to Gen on a toothpick. So many of the characters don't understand how others feel about them--Gen, Costis, Irene. That's one thing I love about the books, how like real life that is. We never truly know how others view us and I love books that reflect that.

As far as the "Eugenides intended to "change the mind of the man next to {Teleus}." This is the first peek at their minds." I took that to mean that Gen wanted to change Teleus's mind (about reducing the guard and other things) so he first went about changing Costis's mind (the man next to Teleus).

What did you all think about that part?

You're reminding me how much I LOVE these books. And how I wish I had the time right now to do a full series re-read. Seeing the discussion helps a bit though. Maybe I can just pick up KoA.... because Costis. Also I love looking at hero's journeys in plots. And and and. I want the new book NOW.

Hello friends! I have a looming due date but hopefully after I get it done I can come around more. And re-read KoA. Because Costis. (The darlingest little girl in the world makes things difficult though.)

The thing I noticed this time around is Aris telling Costis that it was Sejanus who arranged for the dogs right before Gen mysteriously appears to tell Aris he really ought to come clean to Teleus.

I'd never picked up on that clue/confirmation before and I can't remember if it's going to be important later.

Remember later when Gen is like, I know who sent poor Aris with the note to release the dogs, and the attendants are like... WHAT! How does he know that? XD

I found that part... and it still took me a couple of checks of the paragraph to realize that I was _still_ being misdirected. *flails* No wonder no one believed the attendants when they said Gen was not as inept as he looked. XD

What do you mean "still misdirected?" It seems straightforward to me, so I'm wondering if I missed something.

I forgot how much I liked Pilades. He's like almost every emeritus biology professor I've met, especially the ones who are the world experts on amphipods or ants or something similar.
