sadly it seems to be an ongoing trend in my relationship with that person. I am unable to cut them from my life.

that's EXACTLY it! And I have grown so accustomed to having him in my life that the thought of life without him makes me cringe. but life WITH him makes me cringe. It's such a vicious cycle.
