I know something of portals but not of those this place uses. What I do know is that we cannot control them and their location is always unexpected.

I have also noticed that those who are taken by them tend to sense the portals.

Yes. Like that. I have seen several entries where they sense the portal that is about to take them away and then find it.

If there was a way to sense them before they appear... Or even do that with portals that aren't meant for us but just turn up at random...

I definitely won't deny the possibility. Teleportation magic can be pretty unstable if the right technology isn't applied along with it.
