On Last Week's Cinema One

Two things I noticed in there: (1) The Sinking of Japan... in Tagalog dubbing. Everytime I watch this I wound up comparing Kou Shibasaki with Liv Tyler. xD (2) The Invincible Shaolin in its fully-restored Shawscope glory. :D

However, it would've been totally off-the-wall if they could be nuts enough to green-light Battle Royale into Tagalog.

Battle Royale is an amazing movie. too bad most domestic movie execs/peeps are incapable of looking past the violence to the heart of the movie: the characters and the huge socio-political message being addressed. good, deep, and highly critical of modern society, rigid guidelines, ineffectual schooling systems, etc.

In its original story it's also one helluva statement against the ancient nationalist right-wingers threatening to regain what Japan lost in WWII; and a "what-if" scenario of a cruel, hellish side of a supposedly wealthy imperial dictatorship.

Although it'll never gain another sequel after the failed Part II, nonetheless BR will be greatly remembered for trying to break the recurring formulaic story themes that seems to be ongoing with current Japanese cinema.
