Just two more entries after this one: a drabble on Wednesday and then a longer non-drabble epilogue on Thursday. Links to all the previous entries can be found
here. An excerpt from "My Life" by Ennis Del Mar as told to Soulan and annotated by Jack Twist.
I woke up just after dawn and Jack was still there, spooned behind me. He must've been awake already because as soon as I stirred he tightened his hold on me and kissed my ear. I stroked his arm and asked the first thing that came to mind: did he ever fly in a plane again after that trip to Dallas? He didn't answer right away, but shunted backwards and pulled on my arm so that I turned over and faced him. His fingers brushed along my brow. Tracing the lines, I could tell. You wanna fly? I thought about what he'd told me, about how the land looked from up there, and said yeah, and I know where to. Let's go then. We dressed and went directly to the truck by silent agreement.1 There was an airstrip about thirty minutes from my house and when we got there I parked on the side of the road. It was early, no one was around and wouldn't be anyway, not that day. We would be the only people flying over America.
We walked down the row of parked Cessnas to the last one and Jack yanked open its door. I didn't even question whether he could fly the thing. He started it somehow but I wasn't watching him, only the sky. I should've been nervous, but I felt perfectly calm. We taxied across the grass and when we left the ground my stomach lurched but my heart was already soaring.
