An excerpt from "My Life" by Ennis Del Mar as told to Soulan and annotated by Jack Twist.
I carried Alma through the motel room door like you're supposed to1 but then I wasn't sure where to put her.2 It was snowing and our coats were wet so it didn't make sense to set her on the bed. I let her down gently.3 For a few seconds we stood and looked at each other like we were waiting for the other to lead the way. Then she unbuttoned her coat and as she pulled it off her hand slipped on the wool, like she was in a hurry. She asked me in a whisper if I'd done this before. I took off my jacket too, thinking, had I?4 I never did answer her question, but she didn't seem to care. Afterwards, she said it was too bad it was winter because it would be nice to go riding in the mountains.5 I watched the snow coming down, and when I finished my cigarette I told her we could go sledding instead.6
______
1 Lureen made me do that too.
2 Least I was not that ignorant!
3 Lucky her.
4 ????????
5 What I was thinking right bout that time too.
6 We never once talked about our honeymoons and now I'm real glad. I always figured me and Lureen probly had a nicer one but his sounds depressing as hell.
