Kanda had almost been expecting the knock at the door. Even if it was only to bring news that the girl had been found, sooner or later he was sure he'd hear something.

He didn't need to hear Heine's words to know that she hadn't been found though. He knew it almost before he opened the door, and he was certain of it as soon as he saw the man's face. He could feel the energy coming off of him in agitated waves that matched his quickened breaths ( ... )

Heine wasn't the type to need anyone to pat him on the shoulder and give platitudes about how it was going to be fine, how they were going to find her and how it was going to all be all right. Aside from just not being the type to care, considering the world he, Nill, Badou and Naoto were from he just wasn't so naive, nor all that blindly optimistic.

No, what Kanda was giving Heine then was exactly what he needed and if Heine weren't so fixated in that moment he may have felt grateful, maybe even surprised that someone would be able to fill that space of need so flawlessly, whether they knew they were doing so or not.

He slid a glance toward Kanda out the corner of his eye as the exorcist stepped through the door and didn't waste time in starting to walk again himself, eyes fixed down the hallway.

"I don't know," He admitted shortly "But I know she's not an idiot. She wouldn't have fucking gone anywhere by herself after ( ... )

Kanda made a small "hn" of agreement as they reached the front doors, taking his communicator from his pocket and pulling up the map on the GPS. The place they were heading was clear across the city, and though there may not have been any sand, the weather was still a far cry from favoring them with good visibility ( ... )

Heine gave no vocal reply to Kanda's comment about the fatigue because as far as he was concerned he wasn't going to need to worry about it. Let it never be said Heine wasn't an arrogant son-of-a-bitch on occasion and this was certainly one of them ( ... )

Something about Heine's lack of a reply had put Kanda on notice almost from the get go. Not that he expected the man to be conversational, and not that he was used to always getting direct answers to everything he said--in fact he wasn't; where Heine was concerned he was almost used to that ( ... )
