Characters: Kuroro, Kurapika Location: Egypt Rating: PG Time: January 14, morning Description: Kuroro and Kurapika go on a mission to test their resonance after the rather turbulent month they've had.
And catch Kurapika he did, reaching out with a hand to almost casually take a hold of the hilt of one blade. He didn't really know what to expect -- the possibilities were numerous and one couldn't prepare himself for everything. It was best, in situations like these, to take things as they came and adjust accordingly, to fill in the gaps Kurapika left or leave gaps for his partner to fill in comfortably, and to be an anchor if it was needed
( ... )
Don't worry about it, he wanted to say, but the thought was a jumbled, vague prod at the back of his mind, just loud enough to be noticed but clarity was hardly his priority at the moment. Too many things to focus on and think about, which was probably why Kurapika hadn't picked up on it earlier.
Kuroro caught the blade by the hilt with great dexterity and carved it into the back of the kishin egg's neck to steady himself. The other, he pulled out of the beast and threw far away, to embed itself in the ground some distance away. Adjust the chain, was the faint murmuer. Adjust it to match the thing's thrashing, but don't let it get pulled off the rock.
And then now came the reckless part. With a burst of energy, Kuroro let his borrowed ability surge from zero to overwhelming, and in the next second let the ability go completely out of him. The effect was instantaneous. The sphinx's thrashing became more violent and its tail hacked into its own back as Kuroro leaped off, in the other direction from the other blade.
Adjusting the chain was easy enough; it felt a bit like a reverse tug-of-war with him in the middle, actually, while making sure that he didn't accidentally pull too hard and yank the opposing ends together. It got significantly harder when the sphinx started thrashing even more violently in response to Kuroro forcing the baiting ability to its maximum, and Kurapika had to hold on for dear life and not think about how unbelievably, foolishly reckless that was.
In any case, he was finally starting to realize what his partner was up to, and against a kishin egg of this size, unorthodox strategies might be the most effective. The chain clinked and tinkled noisily, echoing the strain in his efforts to lengthen and shorten the slack without giving the kishin egg the chance to yank his other blade free of where it was stuck in the ground.
Nearly there, he thought, teeth gritted together as he rolled under the great paws trying to slap him, and in one smooth motion bounded right back up to the sphinx's torn back. Kuroro didn't stay, just used it as a board to jump right back off, catching himself a nick on the side from the passing tail.
But that was three loops, and three loops was all they needed to completely stop the kishin egg's movements.
He'd been building up the energy they would need to trigger the skill they wanted to use here, building it up into a ball of pressure that grew almost painful the longer he sustained it, and it was almost a relief when he released it, the moment the circuit was complete. The sphinx froze in mid-rear, its voice suddenly silenced in mid-roar as even its vocal cords were paralyzed, and it crashed to the ground as if all the bones holding up that massive frame had been turned into putty.
Kurapika shook off the discomfiting feeling of something heavy sitting on his arms--some sections of his chain lay buried between the sphinx's neck and chin. It was always a bit odd, being wrapped around a target with his paralysis ability activated.
Neatly done, he remarked, sounding pleased when the kishin egg stopped and promptly fell over. Everything was easier after the third loop, although it was rare enough for them to manage it. Vaguely, he thought about training tosses and the like to make their lives easier, and put it away for a later training day.
Kuroro trotted over to the creature, watching it tremble in an effort to move, eyes rolling this way and that. Still very much alive, then, but not for long. He crouched down next to its neck and calmly started looping the chain around its neck a couple more times, passing the blade over the thick neck without concern.
Kuroro's pleasure at the successful execution of his paralysis ability was mirrored by his relief at this last proof that their partnership was still intact and he hadn't forgotten how to trigger his abilities; they were resonating just as well as, or even better than before, so nothing had changed, or at least nothing too drastic.
Tosses... do we really have to? Kurapika thought with vague dislike as Kuroro secured the last loop around the kishin egg's neck. He could sense the creature trying to break free, just like he could sense how his targets would try to break through Chain Jail with mere physical strength.
