Kakashi was seated on the bed, slightly reclining and propped up by pillows with another pillow under his broken leg. On the bed and end-tables were stacks of books for reading--bedrest was boring, Kakashi had learned after enough years of being a ninja--and he had made a point of bringing his entire Death City collection to within arm's reach. When Gai entered, he was holding a black book with pale arms and an apple on the cover, though he planned to discard that one soon. The heroine wasn't going for the werewolf, he could tell already. How disappointing ( ... )

"Let me get you something to eat first. Then I will join you." Gai gave Kakashi a smile before heading back to the kitchen. While it wasn't at full strength, it was better then it had been in a while. He'd had to put on a happy face for the newcomers and sometimes an external happy face sank in. Gai grabbed the leftovers from dinner the other night and stuck them in the microwave after making sure that they weren't the spicy ones. Once that was heated through he returned to the room and gladly scooted over next to Kakashi ( ... )

"Good," Kakashi said, taking the food from his rival and making sure Gai had space to sit before making himself comfortable by using Gai's shoulder as a new pillow. He tugged down the mask to eat and listened to Gai's recounting of the day, hmm-ing and ahh-ing where the conversation seemed to need it.

Then Gai hesitated. Here we go.

While he could tell the subject was shaping up to be a difficult one, and he was worried he knew what Gai was hinting at as it went on, it was that hinting that was irking him. Gai needed to come right out and say it, or drop it completely. The suspense and worry was not going well with Kakashi's headache. Gai was shamefully bad at beating around the bush, but still good enough for it to be annoying.

"Gai, if you don't get to the point, I'm going to throw this on you," he said, brandishing the bowl like he meant the threat. "What are you saying? That my dad's here?"

He was making this worse. Kakashi's father. Now there would be even more stress, really, even though Gai thought it might be nice for Sakumo to meet Kakashi as an adult. "If you throw food at me I will not get you more and you will have to hop in there and possibly break your ankle and be laid up more."

But he couldn't delay this longer. Not with the strain it was putting on Kakashi. "Obito is here." Gai reached over, resting a hand on Kakashi's stomach. "He is in the clinic, because he arrived from... from last moment, but he is not as badly injured as he was, and Watson has seen to the worst of it. And I wanted to prepare you but I have made a mess of that and do not know how to make this easier at all."

A teasing reply was on Kakashi's tongue when Gai's words shattered any thought of humor ( ... )
