In the meantime, Takasugi was on the way back from his own patrol in the neighboring sector. It had been uneventful - no big surprise there. That didn't change the fact, though, that he left the route disappointed.

The boy turned a corner the moment he reached the Shopping District, moving pretty much on auto-pilot towards the building that currently housed Death City's Office for General Security. Maybe he could sign up to take over a shift again --

-- or maybe he could just head right on home, he found himself thinking, when he looked up and spotted a very familiar head full of silver hair some distance ahead of him.

Damn it. He had been pretty good at avoiding Gintoki thus far, and now the man was right there. Why were his old comrades suddenly all over the place?!

Gintoki had heard the approaching footsteps and thought nothing of them until they suddenly stopped. He looked up, ready to stare almost accusingly at the culprit until he noticed it was Takasugi, and before he can stop himself, Gintoki looks away.

There is a moment of stillness after that as Gintoki contemplates his options. After a glance up at the pet shop, he figures he can call Katsura over later, and so pushes himself off the wall he was leaning against and casually walks over to Takasugi. If you looked really close, Gintoki's smile appeared to be almost nervous.

"Hey. Going home?"

Takasugi took a step back before he could stop himself. It wasn't that he was scared; he just really, really didn't want to be there. (Which was probably very similar to being scared, but hey: semantics.)

"Hey." A pause, a couple of seconds too long. "I guess."

He kept his answer vague on purpose. He wanted to have the liberty of backing out, switching around his plan in case some sort of offer was made.

The smile faded from Gintoki's face almost immediately, being replaced with not quite a frown, but something far from approval. He mirrored Takasugi's backpedal with one step forward. His arms unfolded from across his chest and hung limp at his sides.

"Going to run? You think we can do this forever?"

'Aren't you tired?'
