Gai was just walking into the building when he saw the Troll. That seemed like a lot of stuff to carry, and Gai wonders if maybe Karkat was just a little grumpy that other day. Maybe it was because he didn't have slime. Therefore, it was worth a second chance. He hadn't even been as cold as Sasuke, after all.

"Hello, Karkat! Could you use a hand with those?"

Oh god, that spandex-wearing guy from the other day. Maybe if he's fast enough he can hit the elevator before nope looks like Gai caught him. He grimaces and turns slowly.

"You again?"

He shifts his armload of groceries. One bag looks like it's about to tip.

"Go away, I'm fi--SHIT!"

The offending bag falls to the floor. Fruits spill everywhere. Karkat looks pretty pissed.

His door is open, like it always is except when he's sleeping or bathing or out. Gai likes to be inviting and meet people. The smell of really spicy curry fills the air in the evening as Gai fixes dinner, but it also is present the rest of the time since it's the main thing he cooks. When he's not bustling around the kitchen Gai is seated in one of his chairs, reading the network and working on figuring things out. The chair is pushed back, flush against the wall, to give him a full view of his surroundings.

Kakashi could smell that awful curry wafting in under the crack of his own apartment's door, past the towel he laid down to try to seal it out, and through every other means possible into the room. He was sure the scent was strong enough to permeate the drywall and seep in through their adjoining wall. The bed-linens were taking on a distinctly curryesque tinge to their otherwise clean scent, too. Ugh.

He knew exactly where it was coming from. Waving a piece of paper like a fan, trying to fan away the smell while looking only mildly disturbed, Kakashi didn't bother knocking on Gai's door and just entered.

"You're not going to eat that every night, are you?"

He'd stayed aware of his doorway, as much as he could when not able to sense chakra, and so wasn't startled at the arrival. Gai wasn't surprised by the question either. "Many nights! It's healthy and flavorful and I know how to make it." He paused, looking over at Kakashi. "Why?" It was one thing to be asked when they were on missions. But Gai was in his own apartment cooking.

Unless... Maybe Kakashi missed curry. It probably wasn't true. Most people didn't appreciate Gai's cooking, including half his team. But Gai couldn't resist one bit of cheerful, silly optimism. "Are you hungry? I can set another place!"
