Good day, Death City. I am one of the... recent arrivals, and I believe I have been more or less informed of the situation we all share, here.

[There is a noticeable pause before his tone grows more serious.]...I am willing to offer my assistance in bringing an end to this war. I am not saying that I would like to fight. In fact, I would prefer ( Read more... )

Well, you should prepare to see even more bleak-named places around here, but it's the City's own motif, I guess you can say.

For example, I am the baker over at Death By Pastry, one of the premiere cafes here. Even I myself thought the name a little dark, but it grows on you.

Strange. I wonder who decided on a morbid theme like that.

A baker, huh? You were able to acquire a job, here?

We do deal with Death, Witches, Kishin Eggs and everything like that.

Oh, yes, there are various job openings in different businesses around the city, many of which are rather good paying jobs. The Shibusen staff could direct you as to where you can visit to see the open positions.

So I've heard, at least the nutshell version. It's all very... peculiar.

I see. Maybe that's something I'll have to look into.

I said that about the name of this place too but it still kind of resembles death to me.

[Switches to video too, why not.]

What makes you say that?

[ All the cool people do video. ]

The decorative skull motif sort of sets a tone of ever-impending death, I'd have to say. I'm sure that if there were a Living City, there would not be a skull in sight.

Heh. But who would want to set a tone like that for an entire city? 'Living City' would be a much more pleasant mood setter in comparison, if you ask me.

I imagine it was a bit less uplifting for the first settlers who staggered through the dunes to set up the settlement. Dehydration often breeds interesting names for cities.

Well, when you put it that way...

This is a pretty strange place for such a large city to have grown, come to think of it.

It's a common occurrence, at least in the American southwest. Such is the result of settling in the middle of a blistering heat trap. But, despite its obvious shortcomings, the allure of owning land was a strong enough pull to keep the town thriving.

Or so I'd assume, given history.

Is that right. And here I thought Americans weren't all so hot-headed. [Said jokingly, of course.]

Though I suppose the founders deserve some credit, considering the city now.

It is, isn't it? And yet they maintain the theme of death here...

Old habits die hard, I suppose. Or maybe the residents here are really into the idea of death. [Or something else entirely...]

Oh, they are. You'll find that they place great emphasis on people's souls here, or perhaps you've found that already.

[lightly]

There is a war, as you say. Death may be a perfectly appropriate moniker here, for all we know.

Maybe so... but it's a bit too morbid if you ask me. Purposely surrounding yourself with death is no way to keep your spirits up.

Some people are into that! [and he laughs at that!]

Regardless, the opposite is just as true: covering up an unsightly situation with a flowery name isn't going to help us either. I'd rather have it told to me straight.

Heh, I suppose so.

You're right about that, yes. A theme of death is better than one of ignorance.

...Still, it seems a bit much.
