[ voice ]I have a question that I hope Shibusen, or someone else might be able to answer. One that I feel many of us might be curious to know, particularly in lieu of the homage we are paying to those deceased ( Read more... )

What happens to them?

They are dead. What else can happen to a person in such a state?

I have no reason to think otherwise.

I got about a hundred. Each one of 'em supposed to be pushin' up daisies. Instead they get all riled up and start on about the after life.

How do you expect one to know the answer to this unless they're already dead?

There is a man on the Shibusen staff, I believe, is is in some form.

At least his body is. I do not know the specifics, for I have not had an opportunity to speak with him.

But in truth, beyond that with all its talk of souls I wonder if perhaps they know what happens to those unconsumed.

I was unaware of this. I am still unconvinced he would know, however, if he is still able to function with the living.

We... don't know.

No? Not even that man amongst you who is, what did they call him, a 'zombie'?

His case is different, though. Stein did that to him, and I don't... [really want to] know how.

...I guess no one knows. But if they remain close to your heart, I like to think they're safe that way at least.

That is part of the belief I strongly hold in my world. I wonder if the same laws apply to this one but.

I agree with you.

Where I come from we believe in a beautiful afterlife, free of suffering, close to God. [ Allen's not sure how much he believes in that though. ]

But I think no matter where we are if we carry on for those passed, that's okay too. I hope so anyways.

[An afterlife, huh. Sounded like some of the things the Daoists talked about, when they weren't talking about immortality]

That sounds lovely.

I think that is the most important thing, yes. I was rather surprised to see such a festival as tonight's being practiced, but I feel it was alleviating for many and hope that both they and their departed feel better for it.

This is probably one of those questions that don't have any real answers. Your guess is as good as anyone's. [ And he sounds pretty grumpy about it.

A heavy sigh and a pause, then slightly more gently- ] What's your guess?

[she consider his question for a moment]

I believe that those who die, particularly if they are our ancestors, remain with us. Their duty is to guard us, as our duty is to remember them for as long as we can, until they are able to move on.

[ When he speaks, his voice is lacking much emotion or inflexion. ] Then that's what happens. Maybe stuff at home goes on without them or maybe it doesn't. But at least you've answered the part about their souls.

[Mulan is quiet, uncertain of what she thinks of this. It is what she hopes, and thanks to Mushu she feels she has some solid evidence that that is the case back home but here? She is, however, grateful for Gray's words so when she speaks again her tone is not so serious]

Thank you.

And what of you? What do you believe?
