[a brief flicker of video- Itachi's face comes into focus for only a moment- before it is switched to voice.]

It is a curious thing, madness. I wonder, when one is in the throes of it- do their true feelings come out?

I think the latter would make more sense. While mad, our emotions are affected by all the things we conjure up.

Though, I suppose it could also force us to be more truthful to ourselves, face our demons. That sort of thing.

Face our demons. That is an interesting way to look at it.

[a quiet smile, and her voice has a serene quality to it almost]

Everyone's got some form of darkness within ourselves, whether we like to admit it or not. The madness just drags them forward and... hmm, distorts them? Though I'm not sure that would be the right word for it. Magnify them, perhaps?

[he nods at the communicator- even if she can't see it]

Magnify is a good word. So you do believe madness stems from feelings, however small or hidden they may be?

You believe that's all it is?

Madness distorts things. It's an unreliable gauge if you want to use it to measure or read somebody. You're just as likely to see someone's 'true' feelings as being mislead by what you see.

Especially if you're trying to read yourself.

Madness is a disorder of the mind characterized by abnormal mental or behavioral patterns.

True feelings don't come out, abnormal ones do.

And the abnormal feelings come from nowhere?

The mind is perfectly capable of creating feelings. Those are not taught.

If the mind isn't working right, the feelings it creates aren't right either.
