A trolley is running out of control down a track towards five workers who can't be warned in time.  You are standing within reach of a lever that could divert the trolley to a siding, but there is a single workman there.  Would you pull the lever and kill one to save five?

Suppose a very fat workman (large enough to stop the train) was on a bridge ( Read more... )

Getting to know people. It's a thought-provoking question.

Learning how they think is a start. You don't need to concern yourself with it.

That's stupid.

Why do you say that?

Because I don't care about imaginary trains and moral problems.

And so that means that the question is beneath you. Or is it that the moral dilemma's really that difficult, and you wouldn't be able to act if you were in that situation?

It's a difficult model, but it should be easy enough to imagine yourself in that situation.

Yes, it is easy enough. The answer, too--I'd either push the five workers out of the way or stop the trolley myself.

For the purposes of the problem, you wouldn't be able to make it in time. But it's admirable that you'd put yourself in danger that way.

Eeeeh?! I would want to save everyone! One life is just as important as many.

Of course you'd want to save everyone, but rarely are we that fortunate. Sometimes you have to make a difficult choice.

Maybe, but I would never sacrifice someone else. There are always other options so long as you look hard enough.

However, if you were to wait that long to look, the five men would be dead.
