[This makes all the sense in the world to him. Being a soldier himself--who often fights away from his comrades and friends-- it's not like he can't empathize.]
[And maybe he's stating the obvious, but he doesn't really know what Gai and Lee's relationship was like. Close comrades? Teacher and student? He has no idea, so he's leaving an opening for any kind of discourse on it.]

Gai would never lie about something like this though, and the man's distress over his student's plight is plain. At last, he digs up something that sounds vaguely like reassurance]
