How can you tell that this madness is caused by the wavelength and not just normal holiday exuberance?

It's actually a mixture of both. Because of the already large gathering of large holiday tension, you could say the madness can more easily "seep" into it and exasperate the situation.

But we can also sense the madness and differentiate between it and other emotions.

Given the nature of the holiday and the commercial nature of it, I suppose it's not too surprising. Mad rushes are standard fare, but not quite like this.
