[A pause before she clicks the video on. The room is a little dark, but she's lit by the various computer screens she's working on around her.]

Yes.

Just...dreams. Memories. I've been thinking about things from my world...

I see. Do you need anything? I'm aware you're not particularly fond of me in your room, however...

[He looks like he might make an attempt to enter it anyway]

[She says nothing for a moment, just. listlessly plunks on a few keys, then stops, her fingers resting over them.

She gives a shallow nod, permission to enter.

The room is full of her works--there's half as much as what she used to have ever since the incident with Evil, but enough to make the room thoroughly cluttered in an organization that only makes sense to her.

But there's a mostly clearly path from the door to the little hollow where Lain sits on her chair at her desk and works. Just mind the wires that run across the pathway.]

[ She wonders if she can just call Lain out on how she's awfully cynical towards the people she's supposed to be worshipped by. ]

[ but then she remembers that is the world where she has 3 personalities and is part computer or some nonsensical shit, like everything else on her planet, so maybe God in her world is another term for giant orange panda misanthrope. ]

Lain, are you okay?

[Lain flips the video on, but doesn't look at it as she continues to work a little.

After a moment, she asks] What drives you?

No. Our little toe and our appendix are both getting smaller through the generations, as they are no longer serving a purpose. We're still evolving.

[She doesn't look impressed]

That's not quite what I meant.

We're not absurd or worthless if your entire premise is wrong. We all know what drives us, too.

[She couldn't care less about that first part]

What drives you?

What does 'satisfy the desires of the flesh' means?

Reply

wiredgod August 26 2011, 02:07:24 UTC
Um... Just... things. Worldly possessions. Things that keep humans tethered to the real world, or things that will benefit them.

Or things like addictions--drugs, alcohol-- gluttony. Things that bring repeated, but brief, gratification.

Or...something like that...

I see.

So...alcohol satisfied those desires in the wrong way?

I think alcohol works the same as everything...some people are fine with it, and some abuse it.

[She shrugs lightly] It helps people relax sometimes, but it can also make them feel worse...

As with all sweeping generalizations you'll find gaping holes in your statements. Evolution is impossible to stop and mankind is far from stagnating. If the people you've met have given you that impression than it's only your fault for continually picking the losers of the genetic lottery. Not everyone wanders purposeless, banging off the proverbial walls of life.

[She stares at the words, making a quiet 'hmm' noise]

Maybe not in your world.

My world is likely an extreme case, having forcefully pruned the gene pool in a twisted Darwinian fashion. It's nigh impossible to say that anyone in my world is purposeless, but I was speaking in the broader strokes of humanity as a whole. There are unifying traits of the species that seem to carry over between universes, my previous topic being one of them.

[She doesn't particularly care about the fine lines of this argument, really, and so she changes the subject]

What drives you?
