[Shuurei arrives at the judging area a few minutes before 11, carrying a box with her entry inside.]

[She had a lot of experience cooking back home but never made pie until a couple of days earlier. Such sweets hadn’t existed in ancient China Saiunkoku so her choice of filling is a bit odd. Tangerine slices peeled and mixed with a bit of honey. She also made her pie by wrapping a very large crust around the tangerine filling, instead of the typical one crust on the bottom and one on the top, so it kind of resembles a giant steamed bun in shape.]

[She looks around, waiting for the contest to start.]

[And as they wait, Shuurei's personal cheerleader's arrival is heralded by a familiar flute playing. Fluttering after him are some curtains he'd fashioned into a cape, and on it Ryuuren had written in large, (garish) bright colours:

Soul Friend Number One is Unbeatable!!

It was, of course, written in Saiunkoku-ese Chinese a foreign language (with perfect orthography). So chances are no one will know he's associated with Shuurei.

Except now he's stopping right beside her with a flourish.]

[Shuurei winces at the unfortunately familiar sound of the flute and would have covered her ears if her hands weren’t full with the pie box. She turns and groans to herself when she sees the makeshift cape.]

Ryuuren, what are you doing?

[tries to protest] You don’t really have to… I only just learned to make pie. [She kind of hopes he’ll wander off before the judges arrive. She doesn’t want to be seen with this eccentric if he upsets the judges with his flute playing.]

It's filled with tangerine slices and honey. I tried red bean paste, too, but it came out too sweet and dry.

[Turning back, Shuurei sees Ryuuren reaching the pie.] Ryuuren! [She quickly tries to pull it away and the sudden movement causes it to start sliding out of the box.] Aaah!

[well! it's been a while since he's done any sort of cooking, but he did always enjoy it well enough.

he arrives just on time, whipping the boxed pie out from beneath his cape (where was he keeping it?) and presenting it to the judges' table with a flourish.

what they'll see when they open it seems to be a perfectly innocuous pie -- neatly made, evenly baked. when they get to the filling of his special hellfire mince pie with its oozing red curry sauce, that's when things will be quite literally spiced up.]
