AROUND DEATH CITY [Open to New guests + NPCs + Volunteers] guillotineofgod August 14 2011, 05:04:00 UTC
At the base of the stairs waits a rather peculiar sight: parked right in front of it is what appears to be a small dune buggy. What sets it apart as remarkable is the fact that a vast collection of speakers and subwoofers hang off of it, to the extent that it remains in question whether or not the vehicle can even move under the combined weight of them. Behind it is coupled, of all things, three large black coffins on wheels, linked together in some kind of morbid road train. Standing next to it is a vacant-eyed youth wearing the garb of a priest, presumably “Justin”, who Black★Star was referring to earlier. Several other people were standing nearby.

Wordlessly, he turns and jumps into the seat of the buggy and fires it up, sending gouts of smoke spilling from the gigantic exhausts. The engine is loud, but not nearly as much as the sound that assaults the ears of everybody present within a kilometer radius as the speakers roar to life with offensively loud and brain-breaking Techno. With music blaring, the train begins to move and ( ... )

Recalling Black★Star's reference to someone named Justin, L figures that this has to be him. Not that he's thrilled; priests, along with doctors and politicians, have always made him somewhat uneasy. That's not all; that incredibly lavish sound system has his sensitive eardrums aching already. He has a feeling that he's not going to like what's coming next.

Fuck L's intuition. He knew it. That techno is awful; it claws at the inside of his head, and his hands fly to his ears to attempt to block it out. But the bass still pounds against the inside of his chest. L dives for the train just to get away from Justin and his terrible taste.

He doesn't hear his communicator beep. He can't, but he notices several other people looking at theirs. Rather than take out his own, he leans over to look at the one in the lap of the person sitting in front of him so he can keep his hands over his ears ( ... )

L jumped when he heard the voice; his nerves were frazzled, and switching modes from "braced and enduring difficult stimuli" to "open for conversation" was rather difficult for him.

"I... yes. I'm new," he snapped, in a tone that was probably a good degree harsher than he intended it to be. A perceptive person could probably pick up on his uneasiness, and it was likely that Auron could, especially since he'd initially noticed L's reaction to the pounding techno.

It wasn't so much that Auron in particular spooked L, although the fact that Auron was the sort to unintentionally creep out others certainly didn't help. No, it had more to do with the fact that people in general didn't put L at ease. He drew his knees toward his chest, keeping his dark, owlish eyes warily on the man.

"I have a lot of questions, to say the least," he said, in a decidedly less abrasive tone. "Such as who you are, for starters."

"Auron?" L asked, trying it out and letting it roll of his tongue. Not surprisingly, it was unfamiliar. But two months was a long time; there was a decent chance that talking to him could prove beneficial.

"I'm Rue Ryuzaki," he replied, the practiced lie coming easily to him. "I was a law student. If you've been here for two months, then getting my dissertation in on time probably isn't a realistic thing to hope for, is it?"

It was subtle, but L's expression darkened. The moment he was taken from was a moment of panic and chaos, moments before his own certain death. Did he want to go back to that? If he was dead anyway, did it matter if he started a new life here?

"You know... if that's true... back home, I didn't have much longer to live. So if I did return to the last thing I remembered, I would probably stop existing... so maybe being here isn't the worst thing that could happen."

He demonstrated some interest in Auron's mention of the Agency, but... it was early, to start planning a career here. He was still trying to get used to thinking of it as a second chance.

L nodded briskly, his eyes wandering to a separate corner of the train. He likely seemed distracted, but in reality, he was supremely focused on what had been said, and was in the process of internalizing the information and planning his next courses of action.

Time was, really, what he felt like he needed. It was a reassurance, or the closest thing to a reassurance he could hope to get.

"What do you do, here?"

"Weapons and Meisters? Or merely Meisters?" L asked. This was a point of interest for him, even though he himself had yet to discover which he was (that, and he was understandably skeptical about the whole thing.)

Zed just sighed, leaning back against the seat in the coffin thing. Hahaha, safe. Sure a lot of risk zones for people to be safe.

Not that he really cared, but really, couldn't they not contradict themselves within a few hours?
