OUTER RESIDENTIAL QUARTER I

[So far, so good. Hopefully.]

[Closed, second shift]

[Figures that Gintoki's first Watch patrol would take place at the end of one of his more uneventful days. The kind where you feel more inclined to stretch out on the couch at home and watch re-runs of bad soaps. As tempting as the idea is however, he can't give Roy a bad impression of himself. Someone needs to uphold the Gintama name, right?

Well anyway, here's Gintoki strolling down the street, not quite paying much attention to his surroundings. How long would it be before he bumped into Katsura?]

[And speaking of the person that does uphold the Gintama name and then some, Katsura's doing the same except he's walking from the opposite direction, looking alert-

Until he sees Gintoki walking by and he gets distracted. Why's he here, he wonders as they get close enough to talk.]

Gintoki?

[Goddamn it all. Is it because of what he thought before? Who the hell is up there watching his every move, waiting to ambush his life? Muns, that's who.

A nod.]

Zura.

[novelvision]

[It'll be a cold day in hell before Zura misses seeing Gintoki. He nods in return; the other doesn't seem to be walking home and that makes him curious.]

I didn't think I'd see you out here, at least, not at this time.

[silvershamurai]

[He's sobbing. Inwardly. Where nobody can see. Gintoki shrugs a shoulder, opting to look down the street rather than at his Meister. This always sounds gay.]

I'm taking a walk. [That is not a lie.]

[Katsura just gives Gintoki a look. And yes, that always sounds gay.]

Shouldn't you be walking at the park then? And since when did you take walks in the evening...are you unwell?

[silvershamurai]

[Look all you want, Katsura, you're not gonna find anything. Gintoki's mastered his poker face. This clearly means it needs to be said more often.]

I'm fine. I just like the pretty lights in this area.

[novelvision]

[Pretty lights? What? What is this?]

Gintoki, you've never said anything about pretty lights before. Are you sure that you're not ill? I could send you to the clinic for a check-up.

[silvershamurai]

[Wow, he's... actually feeling bad that Katsura's so concerned. Oh no wait, he's just holding in a burp. Give him a second.

Burp.

Ah yes, much better.]

If talking about pretty lights ranks me as ill, would you think I had terminal cancer if I said I joined the Watch?

What!? [Katsura is shocked for all of one second, but then he gets it. Even if Gintoki isn't the kind of person to work, he works very hard to protect others and there's someone in particular that needs it.

Even if he says he can take care of himself.]

That's irrelevant. That perm on your head may as well be a hair tumor, and I thought I told you to not burp in public. That's disgusting.

[Gintoki lets that last comment slip by the radar in favour of slightly more important topics.]

The Watch. I joined. Honestly, why the hell else would I be here? It'd be a different story if this was the red light district, but it isn't.

You could have been taking a walk, and I suppose you were wondering how long would it be before I discovered you. Honestly, Gintoki, I would have found out sooner or later. [He's secretly glad though, since this means that he has his non-romantic partner with him.]

[silvershamurai]

[He's not gonna admit that it's creepy the way Katsura knows him. He'll just snort to cover that up.]

So do we have to patrol together or what?

[novelvision]

We might as well. After all, we're partners and the partnered pairs on the patrol are supposed to stay together.

[silvershamurai]

[Gintoki's expression then becomes a fine collaboration of disappointment and disgust. It works, somehow.]

Then I don't have a choice. Let's just go and get this over and done with. [He's not half as grumpy as he sounds.]
