author’s note. i watched gokusen 2 a couple of years ago, so i don't particularly remember if yankumi ever addresses them as 'ryu' and 'hayato'. or if she just calls them 'odagiri' and 'yabuki'. also not quite sure if i can do this pairing justice. but hey. i try.

They are walking to meet the others at the ramen place. It's summer and hot and sticky and humid, and Ryu isn't quite sure why they left the comfort of Hayato's bedroom with its three fans and central air and video games.
"It's hot," Hayato complains. "We're going to eat ramen. That's hot soup. Why didn't we stay at my place?"
Ryu shrugs. "We're almost there." Unconsciously, they slow down.
"You're quiet today," Hayato says, a few minutes later. "What's up?"
Ryu looks at Hayato. He's watching a couple girls in miniskirts walk past them. "Nothing." He looks down at his feet, sneakers, puts one in front of the other and shoves his hands into the pockets of his jeans.
Hayato shrugs and looks at Ryu. "You're lying, but, whatever."
Things are like this between them. They are best friends, officially, but they don't talk about things unless they have to. Ryu doesn't discuss working as an intern for his father's company. Hayato doesn't discuss moving to Osaka at the end of summer.
It's more difficult to do-to discuss, to face the inevitable head on. It's easier to pretend that these months are eternity, that these days are neverending.

Yankumi sees Ryu in Shinjuku, sees him running errands. She insists that they stop and talk, and Ryu hesitates. But he says that he's ahead of schedule, so it's okay.
It doesn't take him very long to spill that Hayato is leaving.
"When did he tell you?" She asks, and her eyes are incredulous and almost comically wide.
"Takeda mentioned it the other day." They sit on a park bench and Ryu stares straight ahead, arms crossed.
"Hayato didn't tell you?"
Ryu shrugs, rests his elbows on thighs.
"You boys are-why don't you talk? Didn't-"
Ryu shrugs again, but his shoulders shake.
"Ryu? Ryu?" Yankumi leans forward, sees his hands covering his face and seizes him round the shoulders. "Ryu," she breathes, and wetness seeps through the front of her shirt.
