Barnes & Nobles has recently opened a store in Cherryvale Mall in Rockford, complete with "a café serving Starbucks coffee." Because of the contract agreement between B&N and CBL & Associates Properties, Inc. (who own the mall), Gloria Jean's Coffees has to move. I won't be surprised if, by the end of February, Starfucks has opened where the Gloria Jean's used to be. I bet there's a clause in the contract that makes that okay, whereas GJ's is not.

I'm really, really pissed off about this.

Though I have good reason to believe that the company mentioned bought the deed to the property on which an acquaintance of mine had his cafe (he has a restaurant coffee supply biz as well), and gave him his walking papers, I nonetheless do like their product. Having lived & worked in our Little Italy for seven years, I acquired a taste for the darker roasts such as those purveyed by Howard Schultz.

But, well, there's Wal-Mart, too, though I'm sure there are folks 'out there' who have no problem with them as their bleedin' wallets* come first.

But how about this; locally, a hair dresser who'd sat in the same spot for thirty years had to vacate because the new mall owners were Korean, and she was Canadian, and the owners intended to pander only to Koreans.

While I do enjoy Starbucks....I would hate to see Gloria Jean's go as well. I do not approve of the Starbucks policy of taking over the entire coffee world. Healthy competition is good for everyone, I believe.
