[Jacob's recently noticed something amiss... Bella's scent is gone. He was hoping it had been a mistake, perhaps Cullen's sickly sweet stench had drowned hers out. But he couldn't find it anywhere now. Not even near the apartment building he knew to be hers.]

Has anyone seen Bella Swan lately? Long brown hair, chocolate brown eyes, kind of klutzy?

I think... [Mmrph.] Vampires are designed to attract humans. Their voice, their looks, their - ugh, [he wrinkles his nose in disgust] smell, are difficult for people to resist.

[This is more mumbled to himself than to Jacob.] So the sparkles really do have a point. Then how come a lot of the other people here were able to resist?

... Don't even get me started on those. [Mm.] It's only when Cullen makes the effort, I guess. He was interested in Bella since he couldn't read her mind.

Maybe he wasn't trying hard enough.

I think there's just something special about her. She kind of attracts the leeches.

So what does that make you?

Human... just, something else, too. My people are the vampire's natural born enemy.

Which means you'd hate Edward even if he wasn't with Bella?

On principal, yes. But I hate him on a more personal level now.

Did she know that?

At home, yes.

Here... she knows -- knew, well enough.

That...sounds a lot more confusing than it should be.

Welcome to the past year of my life. There's a lo you can't explain to a person when they haven't experienced it.

I don't know if I really want it explained anyway. I think it'd just be confusing.
