It's been a long long while since the SB fanfic archive Walk of Shame went offline. Also a while since I've updated my fairly complete list of SB fics (sheesh, I'll have to track it down now, goodness knows if I even bookmarked it). So, I figure it's about time to take some initiative. Now that I've figured out the most basic basics of
wordpress, I thought I could make an archive kind of thing there for the SB and SB crossover stories.
A new SB fic archive. What do you think?
I suppose I could make a poll about this, except polls are wonderfully dense and don't automatically tell me when someone's voted, so the old-fashioned way it's going to be.
Please comment with your thoughts on the idea of making a new SB fic archive.
Wanted:
* opinions on this project in general (i.e. does the world really need another fanfic archive?)
* opinions on whether the archive should just house links to the stories, or the stories themselves as well
* volunteers of all kind and creed:
- to help hunt down/contact authors to get their permission and/or stories
- to peruse wordpress layouts and vote for their favorite based on outlook and usability
- someone with l33t skillz to help configure the chosen layout's CSS and various PHP related options (as I can do HTML but suck at CSS)
- to offer to make/find someone to make SB-related banners, backgrounds, pic type stuff for the archive
- to provide basic beta-viewing and feedback on the setup of the archive (so my own opinion is not the only deciding factor)
* your honest opinion that if you're against
wordpress, what other medium could be used for the archive
* suggestions for anything and everything archive and SB fic related that you can think of.
Bare facts are like this:
I've made archives before, and I have web space. At the moment
wordpress is available and relatively easy to set up; that's why I'm thinking about using it for this project. This is not a plug, nor do they pay me for this. (I wish! You should hear my creative comments while I'm tinkering with blog options and layouts. *g*)
A whole lot depends on feedback here, so:
- if I don't get enough positive feedback, obviously there's no point in starting up this project, so please spread the word and comment if you want to see the project take off, as it were (or let me know if you're against it - any opinion counts)
- tracking down all the authors of the stories will not be easy, as some stories are quite old and some have even been taken offline, so is the task I dread the most. I’m considering support from this angle the most crucial if the archive is to be more than just a collection of links. (if this task is Goliath, I’m barely reaching David’s shoulder)
- unless a kind soul is willing to kick some layout butt when it comes to CSS and PHP set-up, the archive will be hosted as a free wordpress blog, where this issue is moot anyway
- I'll need opinions on layouts either way, so please volunteer in any capacity you can
Lastly, I am perfectly willing to set the whole thing up by myself, but I know my own limitations based on previous experience, hence the quest for volunteers. As fun as it can be to tinker with a new archive, I’d love to share some of the burden and credit this time around, so don’t be shy, even if you don’t have time to help a whole lot. Every little bit counts!
Thank you for taking the time to comment and provide your opinion on the points mentioned above!
Half a self-pimp, half a show-and-tell: my previous project using wordpress is The Sentient!Atlantis Fanfic Weblog (spin-off of my
Sentient!Atlantis Fic Table), a collection of links to SGA stories of the sentient!Atlantis genre. Found hosted
at wordpress and
on my site, just so you can see the general idea. Like I said, CSS is not my cup of tea.
