OMG, this was goooooood! Very intriguing and that second to last paragraph --

Marshall's longer legs take him out in front, and Amita wonders if he'll leave her behind, every man for himself--she resigns herself to it, because logically they should split up, and there's nothing tying them to each other--but he reaches his hand back and she grabs it and runs faster than she has in her life, alarm blasting behind them.

Love the idea of Marshall and Amita sending messages by math code!

You caught Amita nicely - from her idealism and trust even when presented with the worst of humanity. That last paragraph particularly nailed it.
