He looks up from the body laid out on the floor at his feet to find her walking towards him. He grins at her, automatic, and she returns the smile, but when she reaches his side she eyes the dead body and murmurs, "We have to stop meeting like this."
They get down to business, smiles put away. He listens while she shares the details of their serial killer, and she takes in the information he's gleaned about the latest victim, trying to fit him into the profile she's been compiling since the East Coast.
They don't catch the killer that day, but when they go home they're one step closer. They stand close again while they wait for the elevator to take them down to the garage, and her hand brushes against his. He offers to buy her a cup of coffee.
It's the same little coffee shop they always used to go to, halfway between their apartments, but this time when she follows him home he goes a different route. His new place is nicer than the old one, and she jokes about a decorator but he shakes his head, smiling, and offers her a glass of wine.
