Loss in the midst of joy

Although the presidential election last week was a source of so much joy for me, the night was not without its bitter losses as well - specifically, the passage of California's Proposition 8, which amended the state constitution to outlaw same-sex marriages. Thanks for saying so on this. I didn't think it would, but it bothered me on an unforeseen level that even in the midst of such coming to terms on one side that people could still so fearful, so ignorant, so... lacking in compassion. From what I understand, it wasn't well handled on many fronts, from dirty but well-run campaigns to moral pleas that weren't inclusive enough. And yet, perhaps that will be still one day be just another knot in the string. Hope goes on, the world is still beautiful, and sometimes we may be just lucky enough to see it.

Well said! One point of distant hope is that younger voters are much more in favor of same-sex marriage and other queer rights. I think that this injustice is certain to end when our generation is in power and those younger than us are voting too. It's truly horrible that we don't have equal rights now. Still, as Martin Luther King Jr. said, the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.

Annie Lamott is great. It's fantastic that the Christian Left has such an eloquent, funny, and wise person speaking for our side.
