How big is Guild Wars' world? Is it just like, four or five maps that you run quests through over and over? Or is it more of an RPG sort, as in, you have to run across certain areas to get from one town to another

The quests are many and varied, but the majority of them are retrieve item, return item. You don't have to endlessly farm monsters like in Wow to find the items, though. There are also city defending missions, escort missions, bounty hunting missions . You'd be surprised at how some of the quests turn out, too. The rewards for the quests are usually XP, some gold and some skills.
And no, you still have to run through areas to get from place to place. In fact "Running" has become a rather lucrative job, talented high-level players run groups of lower levels to some of the harder to reach outposts and cities, or get them to places you normally don't get to until later. Guild War's world is HUGE. You cen literally reach every part of the map you can lay eyes on.
It's awesome. The new Alliance Battle feature is great too. =3 I helped my team to victory six times in a row today! It's really very awesome to go up against another army with an army of your own.
Adding to Sparda, most quests are things you don't really need to do and you could really skip them if you wanted. Actually, technically, all quests are optional but there are a lot that will make your life easier if you do them. The missions advance the story and are required; you usually do these with groups of other people, though you can use "henchmen" NPCs instead just like you might while exploring. And yeah, the world is huge and takes a long time to explore. If you just do the missions, you're missing out on a lot.
Also, rather than having to run around the map to get to each city or outpost, you only have to get to each one the hard way once. After that, you can use the world map and instantly go to any town you've already been to.
I don't have the Factions campaign yet, but I know there's a lot more to do in that. I played the demo they had out for players to try.
When I mentioned that demo version that I used, it was a weekend special thing because they were releasing an expansion version of some kind and everyone got to see what the expansion will be like as well as people to try out the game. There are no other demo version to my knowledge, though.
