I guess it depends on what type of news coverage they are pre-empting the show with. After all some of it, like severe weather, they are forced to pre-empt the regular broadcast by the govt., which also includes commercials.

Personally I don't mind the severe weather warning too much since I'd rather know that a huge tornado-forming storm is on its way than not. But beyond issues involving significant potential for loss of life, I do agree with you.

Sever weather stuff is important and thankfully these days they are using a bar at the bottom of the screen and sometimes to the left instead of preempting to have a person talk about it. That is totally acceptable in my book because I'm being notified and allowed to watch my show.

I remember a number of years back I was on break from college and my sister somehow hooked me on Days of Our Lives. I was watching the show and recording it for her when it was preempted to talk about a jury that just left the court room to decide a verdict. Daytime soaps NEVER rerun, ever. So the 30 or so minutes of reporters guessing as to what might happen had my blood boiling.

they did that during big brother once. it's a reality show, and reality shows don't repeat. ever. unless it's a really old series on the game show network. the news broke in and was like "hey look a fatal accident." and that's great. thanks, i don't care. i know that sounds mean and heartless, but i can see that on the news at 10 pm, if i so choose.

and i actually work at a tv station. we've actually not done our 9 pm news until like 10 because a football game was still going on. now, we have pre-empted other sporting events like hockey or soccer before. but i don't remember us ever pre-empting an actual tv show.

Preempting and sports is a facinating beast. These days, a sports program will preempt everything even the news, as you so confirmed. That wasn't always the case.

I refer you to the Heidi Incident. A short summary if you are not familiar with it: NBC abruptly cut away from the conclusion of a very intense football game so that the film Heidi could air on time. Ever since that incident, Professional football games will air until their conclusion and thus preempted other programming.

we've actually cut into a canadian football game before per manager's request, even though the manager directly below him said it was a bad idea.

we got a lot of complaints.

Given how often football games preempt every thing else, I have mixed to little sympathy for those who lost their game to other programming.

On the one hand, I know how they feel... on the other hand, they don't seem to care what their game preempts....

It may be worth noting why we have TV news in the first place. It may be some sort of stipulation of the "public interest" requirements. On the other hand, given how many members of congress the entertainment owns these days, who knows if that is an issue anymore.

Pre-empts are ANNOYING. I only care if it's about tornadoes or something equally important.

Nice stations will usually wait until the commercial or announce that they will run the program in its entirety at 1 or 2 am or something, and you can set your VCR.

Of course, these days, you can torrent just about any show.
