Analyzing instead of enjoying

spacequeen is entirely right: I cannot just enjoy things, I must analyze them.

I watched my first gay porn the other day, courtesy of the lovely, talented and generous dementordelta. And maybe it's not entirely my fault -- I was prepared to enjoy it, really, but then things got in the way. Such as: ( Read more... )

I agree with you that most pornos are all about the mechanics of the act....most men and some women just want that lets get it on dont wanna talk pound me in to the ground kind of scene. I think as fanfic writers we do tend to romanticize the act more than it may actually happen.

Before watching it, I would have said that it didn't need to be romantic, but maybe it does, a little, at least for fiction (and porn). At least, both parties need to seem like they're interested in it, and actually turned on, instead of just, um, being there, to make it hot and not just clinical.

I kind of hate to admit this, but even the not-so-nice parts were hotter than the boring parts, because there was SOME emotion involved, even if it wasn't romantic.

word. my issue with porn is always that actually watching the act is a lot less interesting to me than the emotional stuff. porn is well and good for those that like it, but lots of the time for me it's just laughable. i need the emotion, the intimacy, the backstory of a good fanfic!

It would have been good even w/o backstory, if it could have just been more intimate, that's a good way to put it. One of the better parts was guys who seemed to be in a relationship, who didn't just dive in.

But yeah, a lot of it was not that interesting. Or maybe the actors think they're showing interest, but they're just such bad actors, it doesn't come through. I'll see how the rest of the tapes are; Delta mentioned in her original post that a couple of the movies were pretty good (maybe relative to most porn?). And I bumped QAF up our queue and we went a movie back, so it's at #6 now. Can't wait.

Weelllllll...it isn't that *any* of the movies themselves are that good, but there are scenes in all the ones that make them worthwhile. I sent you Muscle Men, didn't I? I hadn't watched it until I started making copies but I was pleasantly surprised. The "acting" is kept to a minimum, and the couples seem really into each other.

And most of the vids have bits that make them worth watching--yeah, you gotta go through a bunch of cheesy porn music, but when you get to them, there's a happy moment!

I think you did, let me dig them out of the closet where I've hidden them....yes, "Musclemen 4". Hee. I had to hide them so dh doesn't tape over them by accident, and for when his parents come to visit. I know he won't watch them on his own. :-)

The only one I watched so far was "Uncut" -- the main army guy wasn't a bad actor and really did seem into it, so I liked that one, and the two guys on the bed seemed into each other so that was nice. It's when they seem bored or faking that I think "right, that's how my fanfic reads".

I hope I don't sound like I'm complaining, because really, even just that one section has been extrememly educational (and hot, in parts), and I'm very glad to get them. And the production values are kind of funny -- as you said, cheesy porn music. :-D I guess I'll have to do an update after I see that one.

Oh, honey, there are *so* many of these! In fact in Harry Squatter (the very, very bad Harry Potter gay porn) the whole first scene is nearly unwatchable. Not only do the two guys never even get hard, but it's very obvious that someone *off* screen is groaning and grunting to make it seem like they're enjoying it. Luckily the scene after that is quite good, or Harry Squatter might have gone on ebay!

I've also seen faked, er, "money shots", if you know what I mean. I know these are important for the (supposed) guys watching the movies, but I was like, why bother?

*Sigh* If only slashers made porn. Movies, that is!

someone *off* screen is groaning and grunting to make it seem like they're enjoying it -- no way! That is hilarious. Or sad. I'm not sure which. :-D

If only slashers made porn. Movies, that is!

That's exactly what I was thinking as I was watching them -- how would everyone on lj write this differently? We should write up some scripts and send them in. Of course, you'd need good actors, like Ewan and Christian and Johnny (Depp and Rhys-Meyers) and Orlando, hm, who else could we suggest? *G*

Re: Just my two cents.... sor_bet June 3 2005, 05:44:35 UTC
You *were* naive! Pr0n is pr0n! Actually, I think I'd expect porn for men to be even less any of that stuff than porn for women. I'd just forgotten about the bad acting. :-D Later I remembered that even in "Deep Throat" there was one good actor, the guy who played the doctor. He was really funny and made the movie bearable.

I think it might be the difference between erotica and porn, which brings up a theory I've developed due to slash: visual porn is for men, and written porn/erotica is for women. Probably oversimplifying it, and I'm sure there are women who like to look at the wham bam and men who want a plot, but in general, it might be this way.

OTOH, it's possible that lots of people just want *quality porn*, like really well-written slash, good fanart, and well-acted sex scenes. I'll let you know when I get to the good stuff Delta was talking about in her post.

Hope you don't mind me sticking my oar in here having found your wonderful fic over at pointed_epigram. I can't resist a comment as I've been thinking about sex in movies quite a lot recently, as opposed to straightforward porno pics ( ... )

Again, missed your comment somehow! I didn't used to have email notification on, because no one read my journal. :-)

the film equivalent of a really good slash story

That's it exactly. We slashers know what's hot, AND what's smart.

Oh, I think you just broke my brain by suggesting the gap between those two scenes. All I can see now is all that creamy flesh that we see the next morning, only close-up and moving.......

I'm not sure how well QAF really did. And how well did Brokeback Mountain really do? (Haven't seen that one yet.) Also, I wonder if those kinds of scenes aren't being filmed already, but we have to take them as part of weird, small, arty European films.

Oh! That documentary that spacequeen keeps posting stills from -- "Doing It Together" (?), but I can't remember the names of the men. I think that may be what we're looking for, although I haven't seen it myself.
