What if I want to do something but can’t commit to a whole year?
Why not join one of our Summer Evangelism Teams for 2 weeks!
Why not do that, and if you still feel passionate, go for the full year? Is there a reason you need to make this big decision right now? As a parent, I would feel more comfortable with any year-long placement for my child if I knew he/she was safe, and enjoying and learning.
Incidentally, I am not Christian - but I doubt sincerely that is the real reason your parents would have doubts. The whole idea sounds a little out there for those of us who look for concrete results from a year's work (read - parents).
If you feel strongly that God is working through you, you will find a way to to make this work. Just don't make it sound as though you have lost your ability to think things through yourself - "God wants me to do it, so I must" is more worrisome than you might think.
