( “why do you think love is so complicated?”

“because it is one of the most wonderful feelings in the world, yet it can hurt so badly at the same time.”)

There are many words one could use to describe a certain crush-tall, curly haired, big blue eyes, dimpled cheeks to name a few-but for Choi Sooyoung, there are none at all. In fact, if Sooyoung is to be completely honest with herself, she would admit how clueless she is as to why or how she fell in love. It was an evening a year back when she felt the flutter in her heart bouncing along the rhythm of her breathing. Beneath the surface of her burning cheeks and the alarming thumping of her confused heart laid a stage of pretense, (which eventually gnaws onto her brain until she willingly and finally accepts) denying that she was going through a phase all normal teenagers would.

But then again, Sooyoung has never considered herself as normal. After all, how could she have fallen for a guy when she has never seen his face before?

Love is an odd thing, Sooyoung muses to herself in her seat. It throws and latches itself onto your heart, never once allowing you to forget that you have a special liking for that certain someone.

“Yah, Sooyoungie, are you going to eat your food or not?” A voice interrupts her thought and she finds an acquaintance reappearing on her face again; heat. If she could only see the blush on her face, she would definitely not have welcomed the guest on her cheeks which, by the way, only visits when he is around.

“Why, is Changmin staring at them again?” Sooyoung says just as she hears a distinctive sound of a fist meeting with an arm. “Did he just punch you? Hah, figures.”

Kyuhyun growls as he rubs his sore arm. He darts a look of annoyance at his friend on his left before shifting his attention back to the brunette. “If you aren’t going to finish your food, might as well you donate it to Min’s bottomless stomach.” Kyuhyun ignores the glare he is given and merely shrugs. “What, Min? You’re clearly still hungry-“

Changmin sighs inwardly before leaning back into his chair.

“I can finish my food just fine without any help, thank you very much.”
“True that. With an appetite like yours, it’s a wonder how there are still some leftovers on your plate right now.”

Sooyoung fights the urge to reach out and stab the male in front of her with her fork.

Love is indeed such an odd thing, she finds herself musing again as she shoves her remaining food into her mouth. Cho Kyuhyun is an annoying brat. What are you trying to play at, heart? Why must you beat irregularly for a guy like him? Why are you doing this to me, who can’t see, who can only depend of my instincts?

Sooyoung nearly chokes on the rice she has abruptly swallowed. She desperately tries to feel for her glass of water, only to find the glass thrust into her hand in a split second. Without hesitance, she brings it towards her lips and gulps a mouthful of water into her digestive system.

“Whoa, slow down there, pig Soo. Don’t choke and die on us now!” Kyuhyun promptly reaches out to pat her back gently.

Hah, Sooyoung coughs and hits her chest a few times. She edges away from the hand brushing against her back and lifts a hand up. “I’m fine, Kyuhyun. Thanks.”

“Seriously, be more careful next time. What would you do when we’re not here with you?” Kyuhyun says sternly and retracts his hand back. “We can’t always be around each other forever, you know that.”

Why not? Sooyoung wants so desperately to ask, but holds herself back. “Didn’t I live just fine before you two came into my life? I’ll be fine.” Although I think I might have grown a little too accustomed to the presence of the both of you…gosh, I even ended up liking you, Kyuhyun.

If only love isn’t as complicated.

Changmin watches and observes-silently and painfully-the scene unfolding in front of him. He listens to the conversation his two best friends are sharing with each other, and wishes so badly that he could join them as well.

“Say, Kyuhyun-ah, what do I look like?”
“Honestly? You look like a pig.”
“Damn you, Cho. Go die.”
“I was just kidding,” Kyuhyun snickers seeing how annoyed Sooyoung is at him. “You’re pretty decent looking, to be fairly honest.”

Changmin notes the faint blush in her cheeks when Kyuhyun said that. “Really?” He glances briefly to his best friend and sees him shrugging nonchalantly. “Yeah.”

You’re beautiful, Changmin’s eyes return to linger on Sooyoung, as if mentally trying to send a telepathic message to her. You’re beautiful, Choi Sooyoung. You have a pair of very big and very beautiful eyes, along with high cheekbones whenever you smile. You’re beautiful.

Changmin wishes there and then that he isn’t a mute. For once, he wants to hear his own voice, to be able to exchange greetings and sentences, to have a decent conversation. It is so difficult for Sooyoung to even acknowledge his presence sometimes, for she couldn’t see him, and he couldn’t speak. When Kyuhyun isn’t there, there would only be air lingering between them and nothing else. They have communicated using Braille before, but it just isn’t the same. There is a difference in Sooyoung’s way of speech whenever she speaks to Kyuhyun, and for once, Changmin wants to know how it feels like to be able to have her raise her voice like that at him, or to snap and hiss at him.

Instead, he stays quiet most of the time-because he has no other choice but to be. Since the day he was born and till the day he has grown into the man he is now, Changmin will always and forever be a mute. But no, him being a mute isn’t the worst, in his opinion. Not at all, no. The huge problem lies on the woman he has fallen in love with.

With his incapability of speaking, and her inescapably blind sight, how is she going to notice him?

He has no idea.

And that undeniably to Shim Changmin, is the worst.

(“that is a very good answer, kyuhyun-sshi. I suppose you have someone you like at the current moment?”

“as a matter of fact, yes, I do, professor oh. but sadly, I don’t think I will ever confess to that person.”

“and why not?”

his professor is looking at him with a curious expression on his face, but kyuhyun merely smiles and answers;

“because love is complicated.”)
